Medieval chesspiece made of walrus ivory; discovered on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, sometime before 1831. Popular legend says that the sea carried away a large stretch of beach, exposing a small stone building. A curious local discovered the building and broke into it. In the darkness within, he was amazed to find what looked to be a gathering of elves or fairies. In terror, he fled home. His more practical wife made him bring her to the site, and they gathered up the figures. This image is available as a poster.
